Material preparation for a 300 km Brevet de Randonneur Mondiaux

When considering cycling long distances, it is important to be well prepared. Generally, beyond 100 km, it is advisable to have some training to endure the duration. If you plan to travel more than 200 km, it is recommended to plan for more rigorous preparation, both physically and logistically. For example, it is important to choose your equipment carefully, plan for regular water and food refueling, and ensure that you have the necessary knowledge to manage emergency situations.

If you participate in a 300 km BRM, it is essential to be well prepared, including on logistical aspects such as refueling. Indeed, on such a distance, managing food and hydration is essential to be able to endure. It is therefore essential to plan for refueling, including easily digestible and energy-rich foods, as well as water and drinks to stay well hydrated.

Let's take a BRM of 300 km as a case study and add a flagrant reality check: the 300 km BRM of the Audax Club Parisien.

It is interesting because it addresses the cyclist directly: this BRM is nocturnal, with a start between 8pm and 9pm. In addition, it is in the purest randonneur tradition since there is no solid or liquid refueling: the cyclist must manage everything. We will also add cartography, although part of the route seems to be marked.

The elements to prepare for this ride include, in addition to training, the bike and its equipment, the cyclist, and solid and liquid nutrition.

The bike and its equipment.

Fixed front and rear lighting for the road + batteries + spare batteries.
Lightweight helmet-mounted lighting.
Additional bottle cage used to carry night and/or rain clothes.
GPS with the loaded BRM 300 route and its external battery + USB cable.
Additional inner tube.
Adequate Allen keys.

The cyclist

Safety vest
2 cycling jerseys
Cycling shorts
Shoes
Arm warmers
Gloves
(Printed road map)
ID + cash + license
Camera or mobile phone

The liquid and solid nutrition.

Bars of cereal in quantity.
2-liter Camelbak (for complete autonomy).
A 1-liter water bottle.
Powder for an emergency energy drink.

Miscellaneous.

What remains important, because it's often too silly to leave your cycling shoes at home.

Keep in mind that for this kind of ride, where you don't start from home on your bike, but with the bike in the car, it's useful to prepare:

The foot pump.
Put your bottles, even empty, on the bike.
Bring bottled or bulk water, or fill your bottles.
Driver's license + registration.

Tip: To not forget anything, it's easy to visualize your day and anticipate the different situations that will happen: you can store your cereal bars in the pocket of the first jersey, but they may become inaccessible when you've put on a second jersey, the Camelbak, and the safety vest, and when you're riding at 30 km/h in a good peloton and don't want to stop.

This list and these recommendations have one simple purpose: to help you organize yourself as well as possible to fully enjoy this superb Brevet de Randonneurs Mondiaux. Have a good ride!
